The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck is just around the corner, taking place from May 14-16, 2024. This high-visibility enforcement initiative focuses on commercial motor vehicle safety, with inspectors meticulously examining vehicles and drivers across North America.

To ensure a smooth and compliant Roadcheck experience, it’s crucial for drivers, carriers, and shippers to be well-prepared.Here are some key tips to help you navigate the inspections with confidence:

For Drivers:

  • Know the Focus Areas: Familiarize yourself with this year’s focus areas: tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession. Ensure your vehicle meets the regulations and you understand company policies related to prohibited substances.
  • Inspect Your Vehicle: Before hitting the road, conduct a thorough self-inspection, paying special attention to brakes, cargo securement, tires, lights, and tractor protection systems. Use the CVSA inspection guide for reference.
  • Check Your Documentation: Ensure you have all necessary paperwork in order, including your driver’s license, medical certificate, logbook, and any required permits.
  • Be Rested and Alert: Ensure you are well-rested and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Be Polite and Cooperative: During the inspection, be courteous and cooperate with the inspectors. Answer their questions honestly and provide any requested documentation.

For Carriers:

  • Communicate with Drivers: Inform your drivers about the CVSA Roadcheck dates and focus areas. Provide them with the necessary resources and training to ensure compliance.
  • Conduct Pre-Trip Inspections: Implement a program for regular vehicle inspections and maintenance.
  • Enforce Company Policies: Clearly communicate and strictly enforce company policies related to alcohol and drug use, fatigue management, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Monitor Driver Compliance: Utilize tools to monitor driver performance and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare for Inspections: Ensure your maintenance records and driver files are readily accessible for inspectors.

For Shippers:

  • Schedule Shipments Strategically: Avoid scheduling pickups or deliveries during peak Roadcheck periods.
  • Partner with Compliant Carriers: Choose carriers with a strong safety record and commitment to compliance.
  • Communicate Expectations: Clearly communicate your expectations regarding driver qualifications, vehicle maintenance, and adherence to regulations.
